Otithi by BRAC — Community-Based Tourism Booking & Content Management Platform

Problem
Despite Bangladesh’s abundant natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, community-based tourism had not yet achieved strong digital presence or operational efficiency. The Otithi initiative by BRAC and the Social Innovation Lab (SIL) was conceived to bridge this gap, but several technical and functional barriers stood in the way. Before the system’s development, Otithi faced the absence of a centralized digital platform to manage destinations, hosts, and traveler experiences. All processes — including content management, booking, and payments — were handled manually, leading to inefficiencies, data fragmentation, and lack of transparency. Without an integrated database, real-time booking visibility, or secure payment gateway, BRAC struggled to connect travelers with authentic local experiences effectively. Furthermore, there was no dynamic content management system to showcase the country’s cultural diversity, nor a CRM to manage traveler inquiries and feedback. Limited accessibility due to non-responsive layouts further restricted user engagement, especially among mobile users in rural areas. These limitations collectively hindered Otithi’s goal of promoting sustainable tourism and empowering communities through a seamless, technology-driven experience.

Solution
To overcome these challenges, 3DEVs IT Ltd. designed, developed, and currently maintains the Otithi web platform, transforming BRAC’s vision into a robust digital ecosystem. Built on Laravel (backend) and Bootstrap (frontend) with a MySQL database, the platform offers a secure, responsive, and scalable architecture. A custom Content Management System (CMS) was integrated to allow BRAC staff to easily update destinations, stories, and multimedia content. The Booking Management System automated the entire reservation cycle — from guest registration and availability tracking to confirmation and notifications — ensuring real-time accuracy. A secure payment gateway (BRAC BANK) was implemented for card and mobile money transactions (bKash), making the process seamless and transparent. To strengthen user engagement and service tracking, a Membership Area was developed where travelers can manage their bookings, view history, and track activity status. Additionally, a CRM module enables Otithi administrators to manage inquiries, communications, and feedback efficiently. The platform also incorporates role-based access control, SSL encryption, and protection against login hacks and code injections to ensure maximum data security. Through responsive design, load balancing, and optimization, the system delivers fast performance and accessibility across all devices.

Impact
The successful deployment of the Otithi platform has digitally transformed BRAC’s community-based tourism initiative into a scalable and sustainable model. The platform now serves as a one-stop system for promoting authentic Bangladeshi tourism experiences, empowering local communities, and connecting travelers with cultural and environmental treasures. Through automation and digital visibility, BRAC can now efficiently manage hosts, bookings, and payments, ensuring operational transparency and traveler satisfaction. Local communities benefit economically through direct participation, while travelers gain authentic cultural exposure and easy online accessibility. The system’s analytics tools also enable BRAC to monitor engagement and continuously enhance offerings. Ultimately, Otithi stands as a benchmark for how technology, culture, and social innovation can converge to preserve heritage, strengthen communities, and redefine sustainable tourism in Bangladesh.
